If you’re a fan of One Direction, then you would know that ever since Zayn Malik left One Direction on March 25, 2015, the hate has not stopped. It has been 8 months now and people hate on Zayn like his departure from the band happened two weeks ago. It’s understandable that a lot of people are still upset that it happened and how it happened, but honestly? It’s time to move on.
It’s hard to understand how someone can be a fan of someone for 5 years and then act like that person never meant anything to them. Ever since One Direction was put together in July 2010, the only thing people liked about Zayn was his looks. No one except for his fans truly pay attention to who he is as a person. Since the beginning, he was seen as the outcast, the bad boy, the quiet one, and the different one. The time has come that no matter what Zayn does or doesn’t do, he gets hate for it.
We admit that him leaving the band was a shock and it made a lot of people sad, but he did something that he wanted to do for a long time. He finally put his own happiness first. People always preach “never put someone else’s happiness before your own”, and Zayn did just that and now people either hate him or act like he doesn’t exist. He seems to finally be happy, so why not be happy that he is happy?
Don’t get us wrong, people are allowed to be upset about how and when it happened, but we don’t think they should be upset about why it happened. We don’t think it was right for Zayn to leave the band in the middle of their world tour, and we definitely feel bad for all the Dubai fans who had waited a very long to see him. But we aren’t Zayn and we don’t know what exactly he was feeling at that time.
Ever since One Direction posted on Facebook that Zayn said: “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old…”, they bring that up every chance that they get. Every time Zayn does something they say “oh, I thought he wanted to be a normal 22 year old!”. To bring that up all the time is getting pretty old now. Plus, do you honestly believe he still said that? He obviously had no say in that statement.
In Zayn’s interview that came out a couple of days after he left One Direction, he talked about the main reason why he stayed in the band for so long. He said the reason why is because he didn’t want to let the fans down. He said: ”You know, I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of maybe other people’s happiness.” He continued with “and that was mainly the fans. I only ever tried to do it for the fans, and it was only ever for them. And basically, I’m only upset (because) I feel like I may have let them down in some sort of way.” He then added “that’s the main thing that I don’t want to happen. It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not real to me.” How can you dislike someone who did something they hated for so long just because they didn’t want to let you down?
We know a lot of people might not believe that Zayn stayed in One Direction because of the fans, but there is no doubt in my mind that he loved the 1D fans so much. He always expressed his love to them by thanking them, sharing their fan art, and communicating with them online. Even though he has lost tons of One Direction fans, he still continues to express his love to the fans that he do have.
About a month after Zayn left One Direction, he attended the Asian Awards and he thanked the “four of the best guys I’ve ever met.” Obviously a lot of things have happened since then, but now people dislike Zayn because of his relationship with One Direction. When will people realize that you don’t know what happened between them and what happened behind the scenes? A lot of people choose between Zayn and One Direction because they feel like they have too, when in reality they don’t. There is no rule that says you have to either be a fan of Zayn Malik or One Direction. One Direction will not care if you are a fan of Zayn, and Zayn will not not care if you are a fan of One Direction. What happened between One Direction and Zayn has nothing to do with the fans, so why do they act like it has personally affected them in anyway?
Before Zayn left One Direction, fans of the band would always say that One Direction deserved better. They would also say that they couldn’t wait for the boys to be free from their management and their record label. Fast forward some time later, Zayn Malik left One Direction and now people hate him for it. A lot of people say that they don’t dislike Zayn because he left One Direction, but there are some people who do resent him for it. The thing that people don’t understand is that Zayn is still not completely free. He is in the industry which means that he will never have 100% control over his life. He has a new management and record label, but that’s also means he has a new contract.
Hopefully as the months pass by, the people who don’t like Zayn will not pay him any attention and will not feel the need to comment on everything that he does. Even if that doesn’t happen, he still has the most amazing and supportive fanbase who can’t wait to see what the future holds for him. Best of luck to Zayn!
