UFC fans have been remembering Conor McGregor's epic entrance at UFC 189 thanks to the legendary Sinead O'Connor.

McGregor was one of those when it was announced that Irish singer O'Connor had died at the age of 56 on Wednesday night.

In a statement, O’Connor’s family said:  "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead.

"Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

A worldwide superstar, she is remembered by fans in the combat sports world for performing at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where her voice carried McGregor, draped in an Irish flag as Foggy Dew was sung, to the octagon to fight Chad Mendes in 2015.

In a heartfelt tribute following the news of O'Connor's death, McGregor said he was 'gutted' and wrote: “The world has lost an artist with the voice of an Angel.

“Ireland has lost an iconic voice and one of our absolute finest, by a long shot. And I have lost a friend.

“Sinead’s music will live on and continue to inspire! Rest In Peace, Sinead you are home with your son I am sure.”

McGregor’s last comment referenced O’Connor’s son Shane who tragically took his own life at the age of 17 in 2022.

A spine-tingling rendition of Foggy Dew saw McGregor enter the arena and turn to salute O'Connor before going on to claim victory over Mendes.

"Most iconic walk-out of all time, you'll never change my mind," one said when watching the entrance back.

Another added: "RIP Sinéad O’Connor. A woman who spoke truth to power. The most amazing voice. Her rendition of Foggy Dew will always be my favourite."

A third tweeted: "That was an amazing moment in UFC history. Glad I was there to witness something so special. All was Irish as she sang."

"What an entrance, what a fight," said another remembering the event. "Type of moment where you remember exactly where you were. Conor's rise was magical to follow. RIP Sinéad."

The contest, for the interim featherweight title, was the first of two belts McGregor went on to win.

He beat Jose Aldo for the featherweight title at UFC 194 in December 2015 and then Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt a year later at UFC 205.
